Worden Sports College approached us again this year to run the mentoring programme with them for the third year running. They really value this project and the impact that it has had on their year 10 & 11 pupils over the past two years. UCSU Volunteers, Ruth Smith, Simon Munday, Kath Towsnend, Cath Holden, Emma Robinson, Betsy Stirland and John Duggan have all been assigned pupils who will most benefit from this project. If you are a University of Cumbria student and are able to travel to Leyland to participate in this most valuable and rewarding opportunity please email Emma at email@example.com
On Thursday 19th November, UCSU & SEN Society volunteers hosted a disco on the Lancaster Campus in the Saints Bar for members of the Loyne Youth Club. The 16-19 year olds enjoyed pizzas and jacket potatoes for their tea, followed by an opportunity to play pool and then dance the night away to disco music from our very own DJ Dom Leighton!
All participants thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to their next youth club evening in the Saints Bar next term.
UCSU Volunteers continue to help at the weekly youth club in the community, attending a variety of activities, socialising and providing peer support to these young people. Thank you to everyone who made the evening a huge success!
On Saturday 5th December, 42 volunteers, comprising students and staff of the University of Cumbria, attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most number of trees planted in multiple locations across the UK in one hour. The record was 653,143 and we’re waiting to find out if we managed to break it!
UCSU Volunteering coordinated the Guinness World Record attempt in which we planted 642 trees between 11am and 12noon on the bund around the ‘cow dome’ on Sewborwens Farm, Newton Rigg, Penrith. Thanks to Dave Woodcock and Adam Jay for their help in providing the trees, spades and planting bags! Thanks also to Joan Raine, Vice Chair of Eden District Council and PC Adrian Hill for attending and acting as Independent Witnesses to verify the number of trees planted with the hour.
